Type accented characters on iPhone and iPad

On Apple’s onscreen keyboard for iPhone and iPad, touch and hold a related letter, then slide to an accented choice and release. This guide covers Apple’s onscreen keyboard, not third-party or hardware keyboards.

Select an accented variant

Tap an editable text field to open the onscreen keyboard. Use a letter with an accented choice available in that keyboard.

  1. Touch and hold the related letter on the onscreen keyboard. Apple’s example uses e.
  2. Keep your finger on the screen and slide to the character you want, such as é in Apple’s example.
  3. Release your finger over that choice to insert it.

Keyboard scope and availability

Apple documents this gesture for both iPhone and iPad. Third-party keyboards may behave differently. The example does not establish that all the characters in this site’s collection appear in the menu.
