Type accented characters on iPhone and iPad

Select an accented variant
Tap an editable text field to open the onscreen keyboard. Use a letter with an accented choice available in that keyboard.
- Touch and hold the related letter on the onscreen keyboard. Apple’s example uses e.
- Keep your finger on the screen and slide to the character you want, such as
éin Apple’s example. - Release your finger over that choice to insert it.
Keyboard scope and availability
Apple documents this gesture for both iPhone and iPad. Third-party keyboards may behave differently. The example does not establish that all the characters in this site’s collection appear in the menu.
