What are accent marks?
Accent marks are one kind of diacritic. Diacritics are marks applied to letters or other symbols and can represent pronunciation or other distinctions, depending on the writing system. Not every diacritic changes pronunciation.
Unicode and character codes
A character is the text symbol you read or copy. A Unicode code point identifies a character in the Unicode standard. An HTML character reference lets you represent that character in HTML source. A code point is an identifier, not a keyboard shortcut.

Verified character data
Character names and code points are checked against the Unicode Character Database, and HTML character references against the HTML standard. These facts are kept together in structured records so the search tools and reference examples draw on the same information.
