Copy characters with Windows Character Map

Character Map is a Windows utility for selecting and copying characters. These steps follow Microsoft’s Windows 11 keyboard workflow; use a font containing the character and a compatible destination program.

Choose, copy, and paste a character

  1. Press the Windows key, type Character Map, and press Enter.
  2. Press Tab to reach the Font selector. Choose a font with the arrow keys.
  3. Tab to the character grid, announced as Character grid pane. Use the arrow keys to choose a character, then press Enter.
  4. Tab to Copy and press Enter.
  5. Move to your destination text and press Ctrl+V together to paste.

Find the example by Unicode value

For á (U+00E1), enable Advanced view, set Character set to Unicode, and enter 00E1 in Go to Unicode. Press Enter, then select and copy the character.

Availability depends on the selected font. This is the documented Windows 11 utility workflow; it does not establish a legacy Alt+numpad sequence.
